Tip #1 \u2013 Add a balance proportion of \u201cgreen waste\u201d and \u201cbrown waste\u201d to your compost pile<\/h2>\nTip #1 \u2013 Add a balance proportion of \u201cgreen waste\u201d and \u201cbrown waste\u201d to your compost pile<\/h2>\nGreen Wastes<\/strong>\u00a0are high in nitrogen and proteins, in addition to supporting the growth of microorganisms and\u00a0increasing\u00a0\u00a0temperature–all necessary for creating a high quality compost.<\/p>\n Brown Wastes<\/strong>\u00a0are high in carbons and carbohydrates, giving the energy necessary for the survival of microorganisms. \u00a0The addition of Carbohydrates also\u00a0keep bad odors away and nitrogen from evaporating.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Compost is like a salad\u00a0full of ingredients; the more the ingredients it has, the greater diversity of nutrients present. \u00a0A compost with a vaster diversity of nutrients implies a more diverse population of microorganisms!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The smaller the waste materials, the faster they will decompose!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Turning waste, aka aerating the compost pile, is essential to\u00a0it’s decomposition. \u00a0\u00a0Without oxygen the pile will begin to smell, attract pests, and eventually create a compost\u00a0undesirable\u00a0to fertilize plants<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Compost piles must maintain humidity at all times, but it must not be kept too\u00a0wet\u00a0nor too dry. \u00a0 When the pile is too wet,\u00a0materiales may begin to rot and when the waste is too dry\u00a0the population of microorganisms will grow at too slow a rate, slowing the process of decomposition.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n During the process of decomposition the temperature of waste materials within a compost pile must rise in order to accelerate the growth of beneficial microorganisms. \u00a0The heat within a compost pile serves to inactivate weed seeds and kill off pathogenic microorganisms that are sometimes found in the environment. \u00a0Careful! \u00a0If temperatures rise too far, the compost pile will dry out!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Solution?\u00a0Step\u00a01)\u00a0Remove any moldy waste.\u00a02)\u00a0Turn compost pile.\u00a0Step\u00a03)\u00a0Add dry brown waste. \u00a0Step\u00a04)\u00a0Do not add any new materials to the pile for a week.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n You’re more likely to care for your composter if it’s not too far away!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the kitchen use a special bin with lid to discard wastes easily while cooking, then when full (or about every 4 days) dispose of contents in your composter.\u00a0 Add dry brown wastes in order to prevent odors and the attraction of pests.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Tip #1 \u2013 Add a balance proportion of \u201cgreen waste\u201d and \u201cbrown waste\u201d to your compost pile Green Wastes\u00a0are high in nitrogen and proteins, in addition to supporting the growth of microorganisms and\u00a0increasing\u00a0\u00a0temperature–all necessary for creating a high quality compost.
